Why I Travel
I've never been chasing destinations. Truth be told, I've just been collecting versions of myself.
Postcards
A letter from somewhere in the world... and the woman I met there.
Why I Travel
People often assume they know why I travel.
They see the passport stamps.
The beautiful hotels.
The sunsets.
The restaurants.
The beach clubs.
The photos.
The bikinis.
Sometimes they assume a man is paying for it.
That someone is flying me around the world.
That there’s a secret sugar daddy funding my lifestyle.
I actually laugh when I hear those assumptions.
The truth is much less exciting to some people, but it’s far more meaningful to me.
I work.
I save.
I plan.
I make sacrifices.
I choose experiences over things.
Travel isn’t something that happened to me.
It’s something I’ve intentionally built my life around.
Not because I wanted to escape my life.
Because I wanted to expand it.
People think I travel because I love luxury.
And don’t get me wrong...
I do.
I love a beautiful hotel.
I love getting dressed for dinner in a city I’ve never been to before.
I love finding little cafés tucked away on side streets.
I love a five-star experience just as much as the next girl.
But that’s never been the reason I book the flight.
Travel has changed me in ways no possession ever could.
It has taught me patience.
It has taught me confidence.
It has taught me how to navigate unfamiliar places, solve problems on the fly, and trust myself when nothing around me feels familiar.
It’s taught me that home isn’t always a place.
Sometimes it’s the peace you carry within yourself.
Every country I’ve visited has left me with something I couldn’t have learned if I had stayed home.
I’ve learned words and phrases in different languages.
I’ve learned recipes that remind me of people I’ll probably never see again.
I’ve learned dances because complete strangers pulled me into celebrations and treated me like family.
I’ve shared meals with people whose language I didn’t speak, yet somehow we understood each other perfectly.
I’ve learned that kindness rarely needs a translator.
I’ve learned that every culture has something beautiful to teach if you’re humble enough to listen.
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is wander.
No itinerary.
No schedule.
Just comfortable shoes and enough curiosity to get lost.
Some of my favorite memories have happened because I turned down a street that wasn’t on Google.
I’ve stumbled into family-owned restaurants.
Tiny bookstores.
Local markets.
Hidden beaches.
Conversations with strangers that I’ll probably remember for the rest of my life.
Those moments remind me that some of life’s greatest gifts aren’t planned.
They’re discovered.
Travel has also humbled me.
I’ve visited villages where people had very little, yet they welcomed me with smiles so genuine they made me question what abundance really looks like.
I’ve eaten in some of the nicest restaurants in the world.
I’ve also shared simple meals that carried more love than anything money could buy.
Those experiences changed me.
They reminded me that wealth isn’t just measured by what’s in your bank account.
It’s measured by your peace.
Your health.
Your relationships.
Your purpose.
Your gratitude.
The way you make people feel.
I don’t travel to impress people.
I travel because every time I step into a new country, I’m reminded how much I still have to learn.
There is something incredibly humbling about realizing your way isn’t the only way.
Another family has different traditions.
Another grandmother has a different recipe.
Another little girl has a different dream.
And somehow, despite all of those differences, we’re all searching for the same things.
Love.
Belonging.
Peace.
Purpose.
A life that feels meaningful.
Travel has made me a better listener.
A better observer.
A more compassionate woman.
It has made me less judgmental and more curious.
It has taught me to ask questions before making assumptions.
It has reminded me that there is beauty in perspectives that look nothing like my own.
People ask me what my favorite country is.
The truth is...
I don’t think I have one.
Because every place has given me something different.
Some gave me courage.
Some gave me clarity.
Some gave me healing.
Some reminded me to slow down.
And some introduced me to versions of myself I didn’t even know existed.
That’s why I keep getting on the plane.
Not because I’m running away from my life.
Because every journey expands it.
If you’ve been waiting for permission to take the trip...
This is it.
Not because travel will magically fix everything.
It won’t.
But sometimes changing your environment changes your perspective.
And sometimes that’s exactly what your soul has been asking for.
Maybe your first adventure isn’t across the world.
Maybe it’s taking yourself to dinner.
Driving to a town you’ve never explored.
Booking the weekend getaway you’ve been talking yourself out of.
Saying yes to the invitation you’ve been afraid to accept.
The destination matters far less than your willingness to remain curious.
Because the most beautiful journeys aren’t measured in miles.
They’re measured by who you become along the way.
Reflection
Where is one place you’ve always dreamed of visiting, and who do you hope you’ll become when you get there?
I’d love to hear your story.
With intention,
AuJené
